Human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG for short, is a hormone that occurs naturally in large amounts when a woman is pregnant. The placenta inside the uterus produces HCG, and it is necessary for maintaining the pregnancy.
While pregnant, a woman may manufacture up to one million units of HCG every day. Doctors sometimes use this hormone to treat infertility in women or in boys that have delayed puberty.
How Does HCG Work?
In men, HCG stimulates the testes, because of the hormone’s similarity to natural occurring LH and FSH that normally encourage testosterone and sperm production.
When a man takes testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), the pituitary gland ceases to signal the testes. Consequently, testes may shrink in size over time, which can lead to less natural testosterone production and a decline in fertility. Stopping TRT after years of treatment, a man’s natural production of testosterone may not resume.
Taking HCG can prevent this from happening. HCG also helps maintain fertility during TRT.
How Does HCG Cause Weight Loss?
For weight loss, only a very small amount of HCG is used to essentially trick your mind into changing the body’s metabolism in order to burn more fat. Both adults men and women can safely use HCG.
HCG plus a low calorie diet of approximately 500 calories per day works in three ways:
- HCG causes your hypothalamus to move fat out of abnormal fat storage locations, making it available for use. Thus, your body uses calories of fat from abnormal fat stores, so you lose weight.
- HCG maintains your normal basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is your body’s resting energy need. With calorie intake that equals your BMR, your body doesn’t go into conservation mode, so you lose weight and feel good.
- Finally, HCG resets your hypothalamus so you don’t gain weight in the future. After 40 days on the diet, your body will want to stay on the diet once you stop using HCG. This way, you’ll be able to continue losing weight for a few days or weeks after you stop taking HCG.
How is HCG Administered?
HCG is given by injection or by taking a homeopathic product that comes as oral drops, pellets or sprays.
