5 Healthy Habits That Can Help Your Immune System

Many things in life are easier said than done. For instance, staying healthy is far more complicated to practice than you might initially think. When there are billions of microscopic bacteria and viruses on surfaces and in the very air you breathe, your immune system must withstand near-constant attack. How can you support your immune system and keep yourself safe? Try these useful habits!

Eat Healthy Foods

In general, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains are the healthiest foods you can have. Not only do they contain nutrients like Vitamin C your body requires to not only run smoothly but also fight bacteria or viruses when they come your way.

Along with sticking to nutritious foods over fatty, sugary, or carb-filled foods, you also need to choose to stay away from tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. These habits put your body at a substantially higher risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and so much more.

Exercise Regularly

Although physical exercise may seem geared to strengthen your muscles, lungs, and heart only, it also gives your immune system additional resources. While you’re sick, you will need to rest as your body struggles to regain control from intruding infections, and staying active can give you strength to overcome and recover more quickly.

Control Your Weight

Unfortunately, weight issues have become more common, particularly in the United States, but having some extra pounds harms more than just your self-confidence in a swimsuit. Being overweight decreases your immune system and can even lower the effectiveness of vaccine and other medications. The good news is that you don’t have to go on your weight loss journey alone. Medical teams can provide support and resources to help your body shed that excess fat.

Get Sufficient Sleep

Restorative sleep is often taken for granted and sacrificed to get other tasks accomplished, but it is an essential element of survival. Not only can getting enough sleep help you be more alert and positive, but it can also give you more energy to exercise and more self-control when it comes to eating.

Vaccinate Against Serious Diseases

Despite internet naysayers, scientific studies widely support the idea that vaccines are safe and prevent diseases that are otherwise difficult to treat or cure and that would cause severe damage to the body in the long term. Polio, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), HPV, and Hepatitis B are all examples of vaccinations that allow your immune system to produce antibodies and keep infections from conquering your body.

As mentioned before, maintaining your health gets complicated, but these five habits provide a great place to start to preserve your body for as long as possible.
